Soul hunters is a fascinating term, so I first started searching the bible for a meaning of soul: “the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
“Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment. That is what happens to a person’s soul-spirit after death.”
Meaning, a good soul is going to heaven, and a bad soul is going to hell.
So, how does the Bible look at soul hunters: this is what I have found: “All demonic caterers are soul hunters. The Bible says in Jeremiah 5:26-28, these wicked men make merchandise of the souls they captured”
In many Christian cultures “there is a spiritual market of darkness, where souls captured by soul hunters are sold.
Our Art Director and curator of this exhibition, Lu Ming Jun, is looking at soul hunters in a different way: the Yukaghir, a nomadic Siberian tribe, have a culture that is based on ancient beliefs: ancestor worship and shamanism.

The Danish anthropologist, Dane Willerslev, describes the culture through “living in a “hall-of-mirrors” world- one inhabited by humans, animals, and spirits, all of whom are understood to be endless mimetic doubles of one another.

The Yukaghir souls are both substance and nonsubstance, both body and soul, both their own individual selves and reincarnated others. Hunters are thus both human and the animals they imitate, which forces them to steer a complicated course between the ability to transcend difference and the necessity of maintaining identity.
